BE BORN AGAIN

Studio Reborn piercing located in Pordenone is the studio where I had all my piercings done. The aspect that has always surprised me (in a positive way!) is the irreproachable professionalism of Thomas and Valentina, colleagues and partners. Such professionalism, along with the omnipresent taste and elegance of Valentina, made me want to write this blog about piercings.

-Valentina, tell me about the Reborn Studio. What about the name “Reborn”?

The studio was born in 2008 and the name means simply to be born again, to continue or to change.

It also has a broader meaning that we wanted to maintain for the studio: the real connotation that this word has in various cultures and tribal traditions. Therefore, the fact of being born again is an important value for our studio. This concept is extremely subjective from culture to cultures, and since it is personal, it is also a very broad concept.  

In the studio we decided to adopt a rapid sterilization process, using a Statim autoclave, that permits, thanks to the reduced sizes of the room, to perform a complete cycle in only 6 minutes. In this way our customers can assist to the process and to receive the personal certification test of the performed sterilization. The functioning of this autoclave is controlled on a monthly basis through a test performed by an external company. As far as the piercing is concerned, we use mainly American jewels (Gorilla glass, Anatometal, Diablo organics, Tawapa) and British jewels (Wildcat). The main features of the jewels are the materials certification, the handmade polishing, the use of Swarovski stones and the inner threads.

-I know that Thomas often goes to the United States for refresher courses, and you go with him. What are these courses about? Do you recognize differences between the approach to piercings in the United States and in Italy?

We go to the United States to follow courses every year. The first “commercial” piercing studios were born in the USA, where our American colleagues could develop in a professional way the skills and the techniques that nowadays we can study and learn. The idea of the piercing in the USA is totally different than in Italy, and to fully understand the difference, it is necessary to keep in mind that the American way of thinking is very “open-minded” towards the different and, in general, they do not have prejudices. In the United States the piercing is therefore just a way to feel better, to improve your beauty. Another interesting thing is the different age gap of the approach to the body piercing. Here in Italy the age starts from 15/16 up to 30/35 years. Instead, in the USA people who are 40 or 50 do not bother piercing their bodies.

-What is, according to you, the approach of youth towards piercings? Do you think we need more awareness? Do you think your public is immature? Or is it not well informed?

Young people often consider the piercing mainly like an extreme form of transgression, or like a sign of being a part of a group. As you can imagine, this is a reason why they accept to being pierced by people who are not trained, like friends or so on, unaware of the dangers they could encounter. Another problem that does not allow young people to approach the piercing in the correct way is the fact that many parents do not accept it and since our studio has as a law for underage people to come with parents, if they want a piercing they need to find other ways to obtain it without the consent of their parents. There is no awareness. In Italy (in Friuli at least) there is no specific skill to open a studio like ours, therefore people do not recognize professionalism. -Valentina, you are a young lady with many piercings and tattoos, all worn with extreme elegance. Do you meet obstacles in your day life? What should be changed in our culture?

We unfortunately live in a society where we cannot be what we want to be, what we feel or simply what we are. I really don’t know what should be changed, it is not simple. For my personal experience, I every day come across hostile stares, various comments and lack of respect. I would love to say I do not care, but it is not true. I love piercings and tattoos, but my heart is really big and I am a sensitive person. So you can imagine how I feel.

-Tell me about extreme body modification. What do you think about it?

According to me also tanning, shaving and going to the gym is a body modification, but if we feel like doing it, why not?? Of course there are limits!

-How is Thomas’ profession considered in Italy?

There is not a real professional figure to be classified into… We are inside the estheticians/hairdressers section. For this reason there are no specific requirement to open a studio like ours…  and it is not a good thing…

-I noticed the development of the culture of a jewelry piercing, therefore something has changed. Do you notice a change too?

Once again, in the United States piercings that are jewels exist from a long time. Unfortunately, in Italy, since, like I told you before, a piercing is seen in a negative way, people think of it like bars or small balls. But also in Italy we are starting proposing to our customers the American jewels. Reborn Studio Piercing is one of the few studios in Italy that sells the best American brands (listed on top of the interview). They are hand polished jewels, realized with high quality materials. We hope that this breach will help opening the mind of our audience.

- I want to ask you if there is a literature dedicated to piercings. Are there technical or non-technical books suitable for any readers?

Yes, indeed. There are some books, but they are for a niche market. One of them: “Modern primitives”. It is an image book that talks about the history of the piercing.

- Do you read? What do you read? Which is your favorite book? What do you feel while reading?

When I was a kid I used to read tons of books, and I used to read before going to sleep. I, day by day, started reading more and more. Unfortunately I have an untidy temperament and I do not read with continuity, and I often have 3 or 4 books on my nightstand J

I do not have a favorite book, I love different types of books and when I have to choose I let my soul decide. I can say that one of my favorite books is “Barbie must die”, by Genea. It is a very simple reading and also scaring J I vividly suggest it!!!

- What do you want to say to my readers?

I want to thank you for the space you’re dedicating to us and to the studio. I also want to summon our customers and also our colleagues in order that they continue (or start) spreading the idea of a more aware and responsible attitude towards our profession in general and towards our own body (even though modified!) in particular.

Studio Reborn piercing Pordenone è il mio studio di piercing, li ho fatti tutti li. L'aspetto che mi ha sempre colpito dello studio è l'ineccepibile professionalità di Thomas e di Valentina, compagni di lavoro e nella vita. Tale professionalità, unita all' immancabile gusto ed eleganza di Valentina, mi ha fatto nascere la voglia di approfondire il tema piercing. 

-Valentina, parlami dello studio Reborn. Da cosa nasce questo nome?

Lo studio nasce nel 2008 e il suo nome non è altro che il significato in senso stretto della parola reborn in inglese: cioè rinascere, cambiare. Questo significato ha però un’accezione più ampia che  abbiamo voluto mantenere per lo studio, ovvero il significato  vero che ha questa parola in alcune culture antiche e tribali. Quindi il fatto della rinascita ha una valenza importante per lo studio. E questo concetto è molto soggettivo di cultura in cultura, e in quanto soggettivo, è anche molto ampio.

Nel nostro studio abbiamo deciso di adottare un sistema di sterilizzazione rapida tramite autoclave Statim, che permette, grazie alle ridotte dimensioni della camera, di eseguire, un ciclo in soli 6 minuti, consentendo al cliente di assistere al processo e di ricevere il personale test di certificazione di avvenuta sterilizzazione. Il funzionamento di questa autoclave viene controllato ogni mese da un test effettuato da un azienda esterna. 

Per i fori vengono utilizzati principalmente gioielli di case americane. Le caratteristiche principali sono la certificazione dei materiali, la lucidatura a mano, l’uso di pietre Swarovski incastonate a mano e la filettatura interna. I gioielli sono garantiti a vita. 

-So che Thomas si reca spesso negli  Stati Uniti per corsi di aggiornamento e formazione e tu lo accompagni. Di cosa si tratta? Trovi delle differenze di approccio al piercing oltreoceano?

Ci rechiamo negli Stati Uniti per corsi di aggiornamento una volta all’anno. I primi studi di piercing per così dire “commerciali” e quindi per una più ampia fascia di mercato,  sono nati negli Stati Uniti, dove i colleghi americani hanno sviluppato in maniera più professionale e approfondita le conoscenze e le  tecniche che noi ora abbiamo la possibilità di apprendere frequentando le loro lezioni.

Il concetto di  piercing oltreoceano è completamente differente,  e per comprenderne a pieno la differenza è necessario tenere in considerazione la mentalità molto più aperta al diverso e in generale senza pregiudizi degli americani, i quali non si fermano all’apparenza o al primo sguardo, la non malizia e l’assenza di un atteggiamento giudicante. Negli Stati Uniti il piercing è visto quindi in modo completamente diversa. Ci si fa un piercing per abbellire il viso, o qualsiasi altra parte del corpo. Un’altra cosa interessante da sapere è la differenza di età nella quale gli statunitensi si affacciano per la prima volta al body piercing. Da noi principalmente si registra una fascia d’età compresa tra i 15/16 anni fino ad arrivare ai 30/35 anni. Invece negli Stati Uniti la fascia d’età è nettamente più alta:  persone dai 40 ai 50 anni non si fanno alcun problema a portare un piercing, proprio perché la cosa è considerata nella norma, e quasi come acquistare un qualsiasi altro monile da indossare.

- Qual è e  perché secondo te l’approccio dei giovani (sempre più giovani) verso il piercing? C’è bisogno di più consapevolezza? Trovi ci sia immaturità da parte del tuo pubblico? O disinformazione? 

Il piercing, molto spesso, è visto e consdierato da parte dei giovanissimi principalmente come una forma estrema di trasgressione, o come segno di appartenenza ad un gruppo. Come puoi immaginare ciò fa sì che accettino addirittura di farsi forare da persone non qualificate (amici, ecc...)  causa della loro inconsapevolezza dei rischi a cui vanno incontro. Un altro problema che non permette ai giovani di avvicinarsi al piercing in maniera corretta è il fatto che molti genitori non accettano il piercing, per cui i ragazzini tendono ancora una volta ad "arrangiarsi" (non avendo il loro consenso per accompagnarli in studio, dove ovviamente si richiede la presenza di chi esercita la patria potestà). C’è poca consapevolezza e molta disinformazione, dato che la perforazione per applicazione dei piercing è pratica relativamente nuova e le persone non sono ancora in grado di riconoscere la qualità e la professionalità . (Un esempio lampante sono i video su YouTube con migliaia di commenti positivi, quando invece se visti con occhio oggettivo presentano mille errori -o orrori- di tipo igienico e tecnico.)

-Valentina, tu sei una ragazza con molti piercing e tatuaggi, portati tutti con molta eleganza

 E discrezione. Incontri ostacoli o difficoltà nella vita di tutti i giorni? In che modo secondo te la società approccio il tatuaggio e il piercing? Cosa andrebbe cambiato nella cultura di un paese?

Purtroppo viviamo in una società in cui non possiamo permetterci di essere davvero quello che vorremo essere, quello che ci sentiamo dentro o quello che semplicemente siamo. Sinceramente non ti so dire che cosa andrebbe cambiato, non è così semplice. Per quanto mi riguarda, tutti i giorni incrocio sguardi perplessi o contrariati, commenti tra i più svariati, occhiatacce e mancanza di rispetto.  Vorrei tanto poter dire che non mi toccano, ma purtroppo non è così. Sono una persona molto sensibile, e anche se adoro i piercing e i tatuaggi e fanno parte di me, il mio cuore è grandissimo… e quindi puoi ben immaginare come mi senta.

-Parlami della extreme body modification. Cosa si esprime attraverso questa pratica? Il bisogno di tutto questo e a tuo avviso un disagio o un modo per esprimere se stessi? Una forma d'arte? Sei contraria a qualche tipo di modificazione?

Secondo me anche prendere il sole, tagliarsi la barba, andare in palestra, sono modificazioni corporee, ma se noi ci sentiamo meglio facendole,  perché no? Ovviamente tutto ha un limite. 

- Come viene considerata la professione di Thomas nel nostro paese?

Non c’è un vero e proprio inquadramento lavorativo, tanto che la nostra professione rientra nella categoria estetisti/parrucchieri. Proprio perché non esiste un inquadramento specifico, non esistono nemmeno normative o prerequisiti particolari, quindi permettono a chiunque (almeno in Friuli) di aprire un’attività come la nostra (studio), senza il bisogno di corsi di formazione o altro.

-Ho notato con glia anni la nascita di piercing gioiello, quindi finalizzati ad abbellire, ad adornarsi. Come mai questo sviluppo? Noti un cambiamento rispetto al passato?

Ancora una volta, negli Stati Uniti i piercing-gioiello esistono da molti anni. Purtroppo in Italia, proprio perché come dicevo prima il piercing è considerato in modo diverso, si pensa ad esso come barrette, palline colorate, ecc. Ma in realtà anche nel nostro paese si sta iniziando a proporre ai clienti la gioielleria da piercing americana. In Italia siamo uno tra i pochi studi che trattano alcune delle migliori case americane. Si tratta di gioielli lucidati a mano, realizzati con materiali di alta qualità. Speriamo che questa apertura sia un po’ la cartina tornasole anche di un’apertura mentale da parte del nostro pubblico. 

- vorrei chiederti se esiste una letteratura dedicata al piercing. Esistono delle pubblicazioni (non tecniche) adatte al vasto pubblico?

Esistono varie pubblicazioni, ma sono rimaste molto di nicchia. 

Una tra loro: "Tatuaggi, corpo spirito", a cura di V.Vale e A.Juno, acquistabile su feltrinelli.it, o meglio ordinarlo in libreria… un po’ di nicchia in effetti. (in originale “Modern Primitives). Libro con illustrazioni che parla anche della storia del piercing.

- Tu leggi? Cosa leggi? Qual e il tuo libro prediletto? Cosa provi nella lettura?

Da piccola leggevo tantissimo, ho iniziato a leggere prima di addomentarmi la sera... E mi sono piano piano appassionata con gli anni. A causa del mio "temperamento disordinato" sono un po' discontinua nelle mie letture, spesso mi ritrovo 3 o 4 libri sul comodino tutti assieme. :))) Sinceramente non ho un libro che preferisco agli altri, mi faccio piuttosto prendere da vari generi e nelle mie scelte letterarie influisce molto il mio stato d’animo nel momento della scelta del titolo, per cui non ho un genere che prediligo. Posso dire che uno dei miei libri preferiti è “Barbie deve morire”di Genea. Lettura molto semplice, scorrevole, divertente e "spaventosa", Consiglio!!!

- Cosa consigli o vuoi dire Al pubblico del mio blog?

Vorrei poter approfittare dello spazio che mi dedichi per fare una specie di appello ai nostri clienti ma anche ai nostri colleghi, affinché continuino  (o inizino) a sensibilizzare i propri clienti e amici verso un atteggiamento più consapevole e responsabile verso la nostra professione in generale e verso il rispetto del proprio corpo (anche se modificato!!!) in particolare.
