MAKE-UP ARTIST MELI PENNINGTON AND HER WILD BEAUTY

Dear all,

as I have already anticipated a blogpost ago, here is a fantastic surprise for you but first of all for myself.

One of the most famous, skilled and talented make up artist in the New York City area, Meli Pennington, kindly accepted to answer my questions for an interview to be published here on my blog for all my readers. With her blog WildBeauty she wants to express her personality through her job and passions. I love it.

I was really pleased when I noticed how nice this woman is and how seriously she takes her tasks and how beautifully she answered my questions.
You can follow Meli and her works on Pinterest, Twitter and Instagram (@melimell23) too!

So, ladies and gentlemen, I am honored and super-pleased to publish my interview with Meli Pennington.

The fashionable lounge: Why did you call your blog "Wild beauty"?

Meli: When I think of beauty and makeup, it's not just which products should I buy or how do I use them. Beauty practices and self-presentation are part of every culture - they're part of who we are as people. Looking at beauty this way, the kinds of topics I can cover go far and wide - I knew when I started this that I would be coloring outside the lines.

TFL: What was your vision or what signs did you have which brought you to start your blog?

Meli: I had thought that this would be a good topic for a TV show. But the way beauty is presented on television is still 'bimbos obsessing about mascara and boyfriends', so I thought I would start the blog and see what the response was.

TFL: Do you remember your first post? What was it about and where were you?
Meli: My first post was a profile of my friend Gerald DeCock, a hairstylist and fine artist. It took me ages to write it, and I was terrified to post it as well. I went from being self-conscious about posting my writing for other people to being self-conscious about not posting enough!

TFL: I have always thought that make-up is an artistic expression of the makeup artist and of his/her mood and character. Is this a description that works for you? Even when you need to interpret someone else's mood or feature (maybe for a photo shoot or an ad campaign)?

Meli: I don't think that makeup is an artistic expression of me at all. It's always an interpretation - of a face, of a creative direction for a shoot, of a personality. I used to struggle with this - and not feel 'creative' enough - but maybe all creativity is interpretation. I may see a face differently than another artist, and see a different path to beauty, but ultimately it's about the face or the photo, not me and my moods.

TFL: I was attracted by a part of your blog title: "beauty. culture". Do you think beauty is interconnected and linked with culture? Do they have effects on each other? Does this apply to every moment of social history or has it changed in time?

Meli: Beauty is intimately linked with culture - everywhere and at all times. What is considered beautiful has to do with history, economics, technology, trade, geography, and even religion. We humans were wearing makeup and beads before we were using metal tools. It is superficial, in that it's an outer layer and decorative, but what is beautiful in a culture speaks volumes about that culture.

TFL: What does inspire you when you write a post on your blog? Are you happy when you write?

Meli: Funny
you should ask me that - I'm in the middle of a serious writing block/ resistance. I have always been happy when I have written, but I am not a 'happy writer'. It's not very social, as work goes.

TFL: How much do you love your job, and what does make you happy when you work on a makeup session? What motivates you?

Meli: I'm happy when I find that next level of beauty in a face. People think that makeup is about covering up, but I find that makeup can reveal a face's otherwise unnoticed beauty..

TFL: In your
blog you mix videos and written parts, but I can see you give more space to written posts and pictures. Why?

Meli: Part of it is that it's just me, and writing and finding pictures is easier than shooting and editing video. Part of it is the blog architecture - I feel that writing reviews and quick posts don't really fit with the longer pieces. I'm working with a developer on a redesign - it will be interesting to see how that affects the kinds of posts I do....
TFL: I love your “Book Reviews” category on your blog, and I know you read. Do you often read books? What books do you like reading?

Meli: I read very widely - lots of nonfiction, on topics from beauty to art to psychology to business to whatever catches my fancy. New York has the best library system in the world, so I'm lucky. I also buy books like some bloggers buy shoes - in my gazillionaire dreams I have a fantastic library of my own. So yeah, I'm one of the 'book people'. On the site, I'm hoping to expand the book reviews into a mini book store for beauty and fashion.

TFL: A beauty trick for my readers?

Meli: One great foundation/concealer trick for women who like to look natural is to not cover every flaw. Using foundation or concealer to just cover the few things that are standing out (like redness around the nose, or that pimple that showed up overnight) and leaving the rest if the face natural looks to most people like you're not wearing much of anything, and just have great skin.

TFL: Thank you for your great contribution to my blogpost and thanks for sharing your thoughts with me and all my readers!

I really hope my next post will be as exciting as this one: from California !!!

Carissimi tutti,

Come mai?
