Last week I finished reading a book of a passionate Irish writer (and friend of mine, I'm honored to tell).
She gave me the book back in 2008 and it has never called me until last month.
(yes, it's the book that calls me when it wants me to read it).



The book is "At a time like this" and the author is Catherine Dunne.

It is a novel about friendship and here we have four women, who have been meeting for 25 years every single year to celebrate their friendship.
They are Georgie, Maggie, Claire and Nora and they all hide secrets that they do not want to share with each other (or better, they do want, but they never find the best moment to do it, until...).

A story of four girls who meet in Trinity College in Ireland, coming from different backgrounds, different lives and who want to start a new moment in their existence at a time like that.
A novel about friendship but also about passions and about women who look for themselves and for a redemption of something that is inside of them all.
A novel with an end that will amaze you and will help you considering that life has not a plot and can change in ways that you would never imagine.

Catherine is a super-skilled writer, she teaches creative writing both in Ireland and in Italy (I will attend a workshop of hers in Verona next month) and her pen is amazingly fluid, rich and natural.

Catherine has always been interested in the world of women, depicting in her novels (she's writing number 10!!!!) various situations and characters.

It is a great reading and I suggest you all to buy it (there is also the Kindle version).

Avete mai avuto un migliore amico/a?
Una vera amicizia, intendo.

E pensate di conoscere davvero il vostro amico/la vostra amica?

La scorsa settimana ho finito di leggere un romanzo di una scrittrice irlandese appassionante (e ho anche l'onore di dire, che conosco personalmente!).
Mi ha regalato il libro nel 2008, quando l'ho incontrata per la prima volta ma il libro in questione non mi ha mai "chiamata" fino allo scorso mese (sì, è il libro che mi chiama perché vuole essere letto...).

Il romanzo è "Se stasera siamo qui" e l'autrice è Catherine Dunne (traduttore: Mazzarelli P.)

Si tratta di un romanzo sull'amicizia: abbiamo quattro donne, che si ritrovano per 25 anni ogni singolo anno in onore della loro amicizia.
Sono Georgie, Maggie, Claire e Nora e ognuna nasconde un segreto che non vuole condividere con le altre (o meglio, vogliono farlo ma non trovano mai il momento migliore per farlo... fino a che...).

Una storia di quattro ragazze che si incontrano al Trinity College in Iralanda. Quattro ragazze che provengono da differenti backgroud, con diverse storie e vite e che vogliono tutte dare vita ad una nuova fase della loro vita, proprio adesso.

Un romanzo sull'amicizia, ma anche sulle passioni di donne che cercano se stesse e vogliono una redenzione da qualcosa che è dentro di loro.
Un romanzo con un finale affascinante e sorprendente, che vi aiuterà a capire come abbattere i pregiudizi e a farvi capire come la vita non abbia una trama e come tutto possa cambiare in maniera del tutto inaspettata.

Catherine è una scrittrice super dotata, tiene lezioni di scrittura creativa in Irlanda e in Italia (a febbraio parteciperò ad un suo laboratorio a Verona) e la sua penna è estremamente fluida, ricca e naturale.

Da sempre Catherine mostra interesse verso il mondo femminile, dipingendo nei suoi romanzi varie situazioni e personaggi.

WOMANHOOD - ERICA JONG - FEAR OF FLYING

What is womanhood to you? (and I am not asking just women, but also men, out there).

Describe what comes to your mind when you hear this word: womanhood.
Try to create a brainstorming of your ideas and read on.

Last August (yeah, I am a shizo, I do write the date I start reading a book and the date I finish reading it, just to remember) I read a very interesting book written by Fernanda Pivano "Libero chi legge", where she lists (and describes) 100 books that impressed her. On page 132, among the books about the sexual freedom and identity, I found Erica Jong (Twitter, Facebook) with her Fear of Flying.

I decided, as always driven by an interior force,  to buy the book thanks to Fernanda's words, which are Erica's own words taken from an interview with Playboy: "With Fear of Flying I wanted to write a satirical novel about a woman who is looking for her own identity".

First published in 1973, it was not an instant bestseller, but with time it reached the stars.
Erica Jong had had this book ready for a long time, but it was her publisher's words: "why don't you go home and write a novel in the female voice of your poems?" that moved her and enabled her to have the courage of writing what had always been inside of her.

Isadora is the name of the main character of the novel and she is a young woman who, throughout the whole novel, is looking for herself and struggling away from stereotypes and rules imposed by her own mother and the society itself. She got married twice and she was unlucky both times. But what does unlucky means? Does that mean that your marriage is a failure? Does that mean that you do not have kids? Or has it a broader meaning? Maybe it is a signal that your life is not supposed to be that way.
Isadora likes the zipless fuck, she carves for a zipless fuck, she has a dream one in her mind. Zipless means that it is like a dream and is seemingly free of all remorse and guilt, there is no rationalizing.
She looks for it and never gets one and therefore she continues her search.
Inside of her there is great confusion and heavy questions. I will, as always, not tell you more about the plot.
The novel is not about sex. It is a more profound look for the rule of the woman, for her real womanhood and identity. This is why I asked you what you think womanhood is.
After 40 years from the first publishing, the book is perfectly (and sadly, let me add) up to date. I say sadly because in 2013 we still are in the same starting point as if we remained frozen in 1973.
The novel is about the right of sexual freedom and identity of women. It is about the attitude we should have towards our own life. The question we should all answer ourself is: what do you want to do with your life? And stick to the answer, pursue your goal with strength and passion.
Passion is another keyword. Passion, intended as the truest aspect of our own existence.

In 2013 our modern society tells us that there is a real equal opportunity situation and that women are too feminist. What does it expect us to do? To stay silent and to do what others tell us?
Fear of Flying should be read in schools, should be considered a conceptual bible for all women.
Women around the world are denied basic education, basic human rights and basic social consideration (some of us do not have the right to vote). We do not have, around the world, the right to think and to speak out loud. If we do, they torture us, they beat us, they kill us.

Erica Jong, in her Fear of Flying, touches pivotal points for all of us to consider. The relation among women, between woman and man.
"I wanted total mutuality, companionship, equality".
"Life has no plot".
"If we haven't the power to complete ourselves, the search for love becomes a search for self-annihilation".
"I meant that I was determined to take my fate in my own hands".
"I looked down at my body. A nice body. Mine. I decided to keep it. I hugged myself".

So guys, please, read the book, read it without prejudice. Find out what can be womanhood for you, and let's build a different awareness for all women.

Cos'è per voi l'essere donna? (e lo chiedo a tutti, non solo alle donne).

Descrivete quello che vi viene in mente quando sentite "essere donna".
Cercate di fare un brainstorming, e poi continuate a leggere.

Lo scorso Agosto (sì, ok... sono una schizzata che scrive la data di inizio e la data di fine lettura sui libri.. giusto per ricordo) ho letto un libro molto interessante di Fernanda Pivano "Libero chi legge", dove la traduttrice faceva una lista (completa di descrizione) dei 100 libri della sua biblioteca ideale. A pagina 132 mi sono imbattuta, tra i titoli sulla libertà sessuale, in Erica Jong (Twitter, Facebook) e il suo Paura di Volare.

Ho quindi deciso, come sempre spinta da una forza interiore, di comprare il libro (in inglese) grazie alle parole di Fernanda, che poi sono le parole della stessa Erica tratte da un'intervista su Playboy: "con Paura di Volare ho voluto scrivere un romanzo satirico su una donna che è alla ricerca della sua identità".

Pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1973, non ha riscosso un successo immediato ma con il tempo ha raggiunto livelli impensabili.
Erica Jong aveva in serbo questo libro da molti anni ma sono state le parole del suo editore "perché non vai a casa e scrivi un romanzo con la voce femminile che c'è nelle tue poesie?" a darle coraggio e a scrivere quello che è sempre stato in lei.

Isadora è il nome del personaggio principale del romanzo, una giovane donna che, attraverso tutto il racconto, è alla ricerca di se stessa e lotta contro gli stereotipi e le leggi imposte dalla sua stessa madre, dalla società. Si è sposata due volte ed è stata sfortunata entrambe le volte. Ma cosa significa essere sfortunati? Significa che il tuo matrimonio è un fallimento? Significa che non hai figli? O c'è un significato più ampio da ricercare? Forse è un segnale che la tua vita non dovrebbe andare in quel verso.
Isadora adora "l'incontro sessuale senza cerniere lampo", lo cerca, ne ha bisogno, lo sogna. Senza cerniere lampo significa che quell'incontro è come un sogno, senza rimorsi o sensi di colpa, non c'è razionalizzazione.
Lo cerca ma non lo trova (forse) e perciò la sua ricerca continua.
Dentro di lei c'è confusione e si ammassano domande difficili. Come sempre non vi dirò più una parola sulla trama.

Il romanzo non verte sul sesso, è più uno sguardo profondo verso il ruolo della donna e il suo essere donna. Ed ecco perché all'inizio vi ho chiesto cosa vi veniva in mente al sentire "essere donna". Dopo 40 anni dalla data della prima pubblicazione, che ha creato scandali e dibattiti accesi, il libro è estremamente (e mio malgrado, tristemente) attuale. Dico tristemente perché nel 2013 ci troviamo nello stesso punto, come se fossimo rimasti congelati al 1973.

Il romanzo tratta del diritto alla libertà sessuale e all'identità della donna e alla sua indipendenza; parla dell'atteggiamento che dovremmo avere nei confronti della nostra vita. La domanda che dovremmo tutti farci è: cosa vuoi dalla tua vita? E una volta avuta la risposta (sincera!) dovremmo rimanerle fedele e lottare per raggiungere il nostro obiettivo con forza e passione.
La passione è un'altra parola chiave. Passione, intesa come il più vero aspetto della nostra esistenza.

Nel 2013 la nostra società moderna ci insegna che siamo tutti uguali, che esistono le pari opportunità e che le donne spesso sono troppo femministe. E cosa si aspetta da noi? Di rimanere in silenzio e fare ciò che ci viene detto dagli altri?
Paura di Volare dovrebbe essere portato nelle scuole ed essere considerato una bibbia concettuale per tutte le donne.
Le donne nel mondo vengono private del diritto allo studio, all'istruzione, dei diritti umani basilari e della considerazione sociale di base (alcune di noi non hanno nemmeno il diritto di voto). Non abbiamo, nel mondo, il diritto di pensare e di parlare ad alta voce. E se lo facciamo, ci torturano, ci picchiano, ci uccidono.

Erica Jong, nel suo Paura di Volare, tocca dei punti cardine che dobbiamo considerare. La relazione tra donne e tra donna e uomo.
"Volevo mutualità totale, amicizia, uguaglianza".
"La vita non ha trama".
"Se non abbiamo la forza di completarci da soli, la ricerca dell'amore diventa ricerca di autodistruzione".
"Ero determinata a prendere in mano il mio destino".
"Guardai verso il mio corpo. Un corpo carino. Il mio. E decisi che l'avrei tenuto. Mi abbracciai".

Quindi, ragazzi e ragazze, leggete il libro, senza pregiudizi. Scoprite cos'è per voi l'essere donna.

FASHION IN A BOOK - IRIS APFEL

how are you?

Here I am, today I want to write about a book I read some months ago.
Since I am a real fashion addicted, I tend to observe and look for books and magazines about fashion.
I found a book that wisely mixes interesting notions about the woman who is a fashion icon all around the world and pictures of some of her most amazing outfits. The pictures of the ninety outfits are photographed by Eric Boman.

The woman I am talking about is Iris Apfel. The style icon was born in 1921 in New York (Queens), and is always been a free spirit and a determined person.
She worked, among the thousands of work experiences she went through, for WWD and as an interior designer. She has always been an iconic example for fashionistas and designers, but also for those who are in love with stylish personalities and what she believes in. The book I am telling you about it "Rare bird of fashion. The irreverent Iris Apfel" by Eric Boman with an introduction by Harold Koda (you can buy it here: Amazon.com). It is written in English and it is a real pity it is not translated into other languages.
Some of my favorite passages of the book, taken from her autobiographical text, are: "I soon realized that money alone could not buy good taste and that what you spent did not necessarily determine the success of an outfit"and "when I'm really after something, I am like a dog with a bone".
Alongside with her preface, you will discover her outfits. You will be taken aback by their distinctive strength. Iris says she embellishes her every single day and she puts on what makes her feel like herself.  Marvelous!

This book is extremely important to me, while I was reading the words by Iris, while I was studying every single shot by Eric Boman, I felt a passion vibrating all over me. It was the vibration of life, of what I read in her lines: "I had nothing to lose" "my incurable curiosity" "I had the chance to work my way up"... She magnificently expresses her thought, her motto and her way of pursuing her own passion and desires. She obtained all she wanted working hard, processing her ideas and taking chances.
I wanted to tell you about this book because it is an example of how you can follow your dreams, how you can reach your desires and your goals, with great efforts. It is not only a matter of fashion, it is a matter of what you want to do with your life. Of how much you want to struggle to achieve what you've always wanted.

Eccomi di nuovo qui, a scrivervi di un libro che ho letto qualche mese fa.
Da inguaribile fashion addicted tendo a osservare e cercare libri e riviste di moda.
Ho trovato questo libro che unisce saggiamente interessanti nozioni sulla donna che è divenuta una fashion icon in tutto il mondo e immagini di alcuni dei suoi outfit. Le fotografie dei 90 outfit sono state scattate da Eric Boman.

La donna della quale sto parlando è Iris Apfel. L'icona di stile è nata a New York, nel Queens, nel 1921 ed è sempre stat uno spirito libero e una donna determinata.
Ha lavorato, tra le altre mille esperienze lavorative, per la rivista WWD e come interior designer. Da sempre riveste un ruolo fondamentale, quello di un'icona esemplare per fashionisti e per stilisti, ma anche per colore che amano le personalità piene di stile e il messaggio che Iris porta avanti. Alcune delle frasi che preferisco presenti nel libro, prese dalla sua parte autobiografica, sono: "Ho capito molto presto che il mero denaro non poteva comprare il buon gusto e che quanto si spende non determina necessariamente il successo di un outfit" e "quando cerco davvero qualcosa sono come un cane con l'osso". Assieme alla sua prefazione troverete anche i suoi abiti. Rimarrete stupiti dai tratti distintivi della forza che portano con loro. Iris afferma che abbellisce il suo aspetto ogni giorno, e che indossa sempre quello che la fa sentire davvero se stessa. Meraviglioso!

Questo libro è molto importante per me, mentre leggevo le parole di Iris, mentre studiavo ogni singolo scatto di Eric Boman, sentivo la passione che vibrava dentro di me. E' la vibrazione della vita, di quello che leggevo nelle sue frasi: "non avevo nulla da perdere", "la mia inguaribile curiosità", "avevo finalmente l'occasione di lavorare per raggiungere il mio traguardo". Iris trasmette magnificamente il suo pensiero, il suo motto e il suo modo di raggiungere le sue passioni e i suoi desideri. Ha ottenuto tutto ciò lavorando duramente, sviluppando le sue idee e prendendosi le opportunità.

Infine, volevo parlarvi di questo libro perché ritengo sia un esempio di come ognuno possa seguire i propri sogni, non senza sforzi e fatiche, di come ognuno possa raggiungere davvero i propri obiettivi. Non è semplicemente un libro di moda, una questione di moda, ma è una questione di quello che vogliamo fare con la nostra vita. Di quanto vogliamo lottare per ottenere quello che abbiamo sempre voluto.

HAPPY 2013

Dear readers,

good morning in this first day of the new year 2013.

I wanted to thank each and everyone of you, because you started reading this blog of mine, which was born last year 2012.

Thank you, since if my blog exists is just because of you.

Last year was full of events for me, both personally and in my work.
I decided to open this blog, with the only aim to write about the books I read and liked.
Later on I understood that what I like is not only reading and writing reviews about the books I read.
I've always been in love with all that was connected to Fashion.
I've read a few books about fashion and I will soon write about some of them. In one of my past posts I have written about one of them: Coco Chanel by Justine Picardie.

As you know, this blog underwent some adjustments and improvements, which are still going on.
For instance, I have changed its purpose: this will not only be a blog where I write reviews of the books I like, but also a kind of special site for my business side.
As you already know, I am a professional freelance translator and interpreter and I am trying to give an impulse to my job. Therefore it is and will be a window on my entire world.

In 2012 I also decided to specialize in the translation in the field of Fashion (fashion, make-up, luxury...). I will work hard and struggle to succeed.
Should any of you be interested in this kind of things or need a translation, you just need to contact me, in the blog you find the contacts.

I will try to be constant in posting in the blog, I believe in it and I hope to be able to dedicate more time to it and to you all.

buongiorno in questo primissimo giorno del nuovo anno 2013.

Volevo ringraziare ognuno di voi per aver iniziato a leggere i miei post e seguire il mio blog, che è nato nell'anno appena passato.

Grazie, perché il mio blog esiste solo grazie a voi lettori.

Lo scorso anno è stato pieno di eventi per me, sia a livello personale sia a livello lavorativo.
Ho deciso di aprire il blog, con l'unico obiettivo di scrivere dei libri che leggevo e che mi colpivano.
Successivamente ho capito che quello che mi piace non è semplicemente leggere e scrivere i miei pareri.
Un altro aspetto importante di me è l'amore che ho verso tutto ciò che è legato al mondo della Moda.
Ho letto più di qualche libro sul tema e presto scriverò qualche post su alcuni di essi. In uno dei miei precedenti post ho scritto una breve descrizione di Coco Chanel di Justine Picardie.

Come ben sapete, questo blog ha subito alcuni cambiamenti e miglioramenti, alcuni di questi ancora in atto. Per esempio, ho cambiato gli obiettivi: non sarà più solo un blog sui libri ma sarà anche una specie di sito internet speciale che abbraccia anche la mia parte professionale.
Come già sapete, sono una traduttrice interprete professionista e sto cercando di dare un nuovo impulso al mio lavoro. Perciò questo blog sarà una finestra sul mio mondo.

Nel 2012 ho anche deciso di specializzarmi in traduzione per la moda (fashion, cosmesi, lusso...) e lavorerò duramente per riuscirci. Se qualcuno di voi fosse interessato a questo genere di cose oppure di una traduzione, non deve fare altro che contattarmi, nel blog trovate i contatti.

Cercherò inoltre di postare con costanza nel blog, ci credo molto e spero di riuscire a dedicare molto più tempo a lui e a voi tutti.
