Here I am
again, and today I will tell you about a book that arrived unexpected and that
was a total surprise to me.
The book is
“T-Rex by the tail” and the writer is Michael Turpin.
I did not
choose the novel, therefore I had no idea of what I was to find inside of it.
First thing
above all, I really enjoyed the cover. It is really interesting:
You'll understand all the images only as you
finished reading the novel.
The story
is a portrait of a family consisting of a father, Karl, a mother, Susie and
four brothers: Matt, George, John and Freddie. The book develops in two
intersecting yet separated parts: the present and the past (mostly the 70’s) of
the Patton’s family.
There is a
perfect balance of present and past, of descriptions and actions. Turpin tells
us the story of a family, yes, but it is a family whose parents are part of the
so-called Jurassic Generation. A real, clear and funny depiction of a
generation of people who were raised in the United States, but that come from
different countries. A generation that had to learn to survive huger, crisis,
hard times and who had to struggle to become someone.
This is the Jurassic
Generation, a couple who meets young, and who goes through difficulties of all
types before being a family and before building up what is a strict, severe yet
well balance parental couple. When the four kids arrive in the family, the big
T-Rex wants to raise the breed in a way that allows them to be independent,
self-sufficient, educated, well mannered and honest. Such values are transmitted
in the only way the T-Rex is able to do: with fierceness.
The only individual
who is able to balance the big dinosaur force is the She-Rex, the mother, Susie,
who is always ready to lend a helping hand, who is always there to fix a
physical or psychological injury. She’s the perfect connection between the two
generations and the T-Rex and his family.
The two parallel stories meet again
when the T-Rex dies, and the She-Rex is in facing a difficult psychological and
identity situation. The four brothers, who all have different and distant in
space stories and lives, gather after years of distance and start working back
together to fix the Jurassic Generation inside their own, to untangle the knots
of doubts, of angers and misunderstandings. All this is tangled up with important
historical and cultural references. A story of family life, a novel of deep and
true marital love, of parental devotion. A story that will not disappoint you,
every page is a wonderful pearl of words, lined up in the string of
understanding, but most important of all, of the concept of being just what we
are, and love each other for what we can do.
I do not
want to add anything to this description. I really liked the book. Turpin is a
great writer, his way of describing facts, characters and images is vivid,
amazingly fast and yet extremely precise.
A book full
of important inputs, not a single trite word or sentence, only intelligent thoughts
that makes you think of life, of illness, of insanity, of education. I laughed
my lungs out and I cried too. Until the end.
This is one
of the best contemporary novels I have ever read. Funny and light, yet touching
pivotal points in a man’s life.
I warmly
suggest everyone who can read in English to buy the book and read it all in one.
For those
who do not understand English, I really hope there will be a translation
published!

Il libro del quale vi sto per parlare è atterrato nella mia
buca delle lettere con mia grande sorpresa.
Il libro è “T-Rex by the tail” e l’autore è Michael Turpin.
Non ho scelto io questo romanzo, e quindi non avevo la più
pallida idea di cosa ci avrei trovato dentro.
Prima cosa tra tutte, guardate la copertina!!
E’ un
capolavoro! Molto interessante. Capirete le immagini che ci stanno sopra dopo
aver letto il libro.
La storia è un ritratto di una famiglia composta da padre
Karl, madre Susie e da quattro fratelli: Matt, George, John e Freddie. Il libro
si sviluppa in due parti che si intersecano: il presente e il passato (principalmente
gli anni 70) della famiglia Patton.
Turpin crea un equilibro perfetto tra presente e passato,
fatto di descrizioni e di azioni. Turpin ci narra la storia di una famiglia, ma
è un nucleo famigliare dove i genitori fanno parte della così detta Generazione
Giurassica. Un quadro reale, chiaro, pulito e anche divertente di una
generazione di persone cresciute negli Stati Uniti, ma provenienti da diverse
nazioni.
Una generazione che si è vista costretta a sopravvivere alla fame,
alle crisi, ai tempi duri e che ha dovuto lottare per diventare qualcuno.
Questa è la Generazione Giurassica, una coppia che si incontra ancora giovane,
e che affronta molte difficoltà prima di poter essere una famiglia e prima di
costruire quello che poi sarà un severo ma perfetto equilibrio nella loro
stessa coppia di genitori. Quando arrivano in famiglia i quattro figli, il
grande T-Rex vuole crescerli con il pugno di ferro, affinché siano
indipendenti, autosufficienti, istruiti e di buone maniere, nonché onesti
uomini.
Tali valori sono trasmessi nell’unico modo di fare conosciuto dal T-Rex:
la forza. L’unico individuo che è realmente capace di equilibrare il dinosauro
è la femmina del T-Rex, la madre, Susie, che è sempre pronta ad aiutare, a
sistemare una ferita del corpo e dello spirito.
Susie è la connessione perfetta tra le due generazioni e tra
il T-Rex e la sua famiglia.
Le due storie parallele si incrociano nuovamente
quando il temuto T-Rex muore e quando la femmina sta affrontando una situazione
psicologica difficile. I quattro fratelli, che hanno vissuto vite diverse e
distanti nello spazio, si riuniscono dopo anni e ricominciano a lavorare
assieme per coinvolgere la Generazione Giurassica nella loro, per sciogliere i
nodi dei dubbi, della rabbia e delle incomprensioni. Il tutto aggrovigliato in
importanti riferimenti storici. Una storia di vita familiare, un romanzo di
vero e profondo amore coniugale, di devozione parentale. Una storia che non vi
deluderà, ogni pagina è una meravigliosa fila di perle, infilate nel filo di
una comprensione, di quel concetto di accettazione di quello che siamo,
dell’amore dell’uno per l’altro e di quello che riusciamo a fare. Nulla più,
nulla meno.
Non voglio aggiungere altro a questa descrizione. Il libro
mi è piaciuto molto.
Turpin è un bravissimo scrittore, il modo che ha di
descrivere fatti, personaggi e immagini è vivido, incredibilmente veloce senza
pregiudicare la precisione.
Un libro pieno di input importanti, non una singola parola
trita, solo pensieri intelligenti che ci fanno pensare alla vita, alla
malattia, alla pazzia, all’istruzione. Ho riso tantissimo e ho anche pianto. Fino
alla fine.
Questo è uno dei migliori libri contemporanei che io abbia
letto. Simpatico, acuto e leggero, ma allo stesso tempo toccante, prende in
considerazione punti focali della vita.
Consiglio vivamente la lettura a tutti coloro che riescono a
leggere in inglese.
